Little England

Well, we finally rolled into town last night. It feels great to finally be here. The drive down from Kampala was rather arduous but the picturesque backdrop more than made up for it. I took over the helm from Kampala through to Mbarara, which is about 5hrs, and then Ben drove the final 2 hour stint as the daylight vanished over the horizon. Negotiating slower traffic and enormous craters the locals call potholes on a narrow stretch of road required a bit of crafty driving, but we arrived safely in Kabale.

When we arrived at the residence of Pam and Eddie Ward (missionaries from England) we instantly felt at home and have had such a peace about being here. Eddie showed me to my room which is known as the prayer closet of the house. Upon first glimpse it wasn’t hard to see why. There’s a chair in the corner of the room that overlooks Kabale town and the surrounding mountains. The chair sits next to doors that open out onto a verandah. Ya kupendeza! I get out of bed in the early hours of the morning and sit and wait for God. Finding God here in prayer seems to be easier for some reason. Probably because I’m away from the distractions and annoyances of Western life.

So many people have welcomed us. We go into town and bump into familiar faces from our last visit and the joy expressed by them is wonderful, so genuine. We have been looking at property both for ourselves and for the orphanage. It never ceases to amaze me the wonderful provision of God for his people. We expect to move into our new place shortly providing negotiations run to plan. We have a man called Henry looking after this for us.

I hope you are all doing well back home. I thought I’d experience some sort of withdrawal by now but all I miss are the faces and voices of my close friends and family. I’m almost happy to leave the rest of my Brisbane life packed in a box for the time being. Internet cafes are a little harder to get to than in Kampala, so I might be offline for a little while. They do have broadband here, which is amazing! As soon as we settle in to our new place I’ll be on the phone to Uganda Telecom before I even unpack my suitcase.
